"Building a Sustainable Future" SHYI’s Vision for Long-Term Change

The journey toward equality and empowerment for sexual minority youth in Tanzania’s Southern Highlands is ongoing. While SHYI has made remarkable strides in advocating for rights, creating safe spaces, and providing economic opportunities, sustainability remains a key focus. How can we ensure that these efforts continue to thrive for generations to come?

Investing in Leadership Development

A strong movement needs strong leaders. SHYI is committed to equipping young advocates with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to drive change within their communities. Through leadership training, mentorship programs, and participation in national and international forums, SHYI is shaping the next generation of changemakers.

Economic Independence as a Path to Empowerment

For marginalized communities, economic stability is a powerful tool for self-sufficiency and resilience. SHYI is expanding its vocational training programs, helping young people gain practical skills in areas such as tailoring, digital entrepreneurship, and sustainable agriculture. By fostering economic independence, SHYI empowers individuals to build secure and dignified futures.

Expanding Access to Inclusive Healthcare

Health remains a critical issue for sexual minority youth, many of whom face discrimination when seeking medical services. SHYI continues to work closely with healthcare providers to promote inclusive, stigma-free medical care, ensuring that no one is denied essential health services due to their identity.

Strengthening Community Partnerships

Lasting change cannot happen in isolation. SHYI is dedicated to forging stronger relationships with local leaders, policymakers, and international allies to push for systemic reforms that protect and uplift sexual minority youth. By fostering collaboration, SHYI ensures that advocacy efforts have a broader and more sustained impact.

A Call to Action: How You Can Be Part of the Movement

Sustainability requires collective effort. Whether through financial contributions, advocacy, or skills-sharing, supporters play a crucial role in SHYI’s long-term vision. Every effort counts in the fight for a more just and inclusive society.

Join us as we continue building a sustainable future for sexual minority youth in Tanzania’s Southern Highlands. Together, we can ensure that progress is not just made—but maintained.

Southern Highlands Youth Initiatives (SHYI) was established in mid-2016 by a determined group of sexual minority youth in the Southern Highlands region of Tanzania. The organization's primary goal is to address the various challenges faced by sexual minority youth in the area. By November 22, 2016, SHYI successfully obtained registration as a youth NGO from the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly, and Children (MoHCDEC).
