Securing Funding

Despite facing challenges in securing funding due to being a new, young, and sexual minority-led organization operating in rural areas, SHYI has successfully obtained funding from various international donors. These funds have supported the implementation of small to large-scale project interventions aimed at advocating for the reduction of stigma and discrimination in public health facilities, providing organizational support, HIV advocacy for sexual minorities, and implementing HIV prevention, care, and support projects.

Southern Highlands Youth Initiatives (SHYI) was established in mid-2016 by a determined group of sexual minority youth in the Southern Highlands region of Tanzania. The organization's primary goal is to address the various challenges faced by sexual minority youth in the area. By November 22, 2016, SHYI successfully obtained registration as a youth NGO from the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly, and Children (MoHCDEC).
